Last week myself, my girl Tanya, our great Huskies, Team GB Skiers Andy Matthew and James Woods the Woodsy headed west for the Mammoth Grand Prix World Cup Slopestyle in California.
On route we swooped up Andy from the Aspen Open contest and headed for Utah. We stopped with Tanya’s lovely family for a day in Southern Utah.. Sadly her Dad was busy with work, so Tanya spent the day with her mum and niece. Which left me, the huskies and the boys took to get into some trouble:) Karl kindly let us get the Rhino and 4 wheeler/Quad out for some fun in the open space and dirt trails. What a blast we had! 5 hrs later and having ran out of gas with the 4 wheeler, and Woodsy with a sore head from flipping the Rhino we made it home just before dark. So much for a relaxed day, it was full on but such a blast, just ask Andy and Woodsy!
On to Mammoth another 8 hr drive to the west. We took a small detour via the amazing Zion National Park home to the largest sand stone cliffs in the World! Definetly a must see and of course the pictures don’t really do it justice. Onward we rolled a stop for lunch at the best and only fast food place I will eat In N Out! In N Out Rocks! Fresh, 100% pure beef. They are free of additives, fillers and preservatives of any kind and fries cut on location. Anyway from St Goerge UT we carried on on Interstate 15 through Sin City Las Vegas and cruised the strip for Andy to experience. What happened in Vegas, Stays in Vegas. We rolled into Mammoth that evening and settled in to the motel and bed. Excited to ride Mammoth and check out the Slopestyle.
We woke to pretty bad weather but practice still went ahead. Met up with Boos Pat Sharles GB Coach and 4 other top GB freeskiers to check out the course! It awesome although rails were rail tight at the top.. Three rail features into 4 excellent big jumps. One more day of practice the following day and that was cancelled due to 60-80mph winds but got short session on the rails. Next day brought the qualifying which ended up be canceled due to even worse weather w with gaile force winds and snow. Same again for Thursday and no riding:( We kept each other entertained playing backgammon, visiting Starbucks and the incredible local Shats Bakery for treats and discovering the natural hot springs just outside of Mammoth Lakes.
Finally Friday bought blue skies and warm temperatures for Snowboard Slopestyle Qualifiers and Final. Slopestyle was super fun now with the change in weather. First run was going brilliant with good rails into the jumps but came up short on the 4th and final jump. I put down my second run and was pleased but had a revert that hurt my score finishing 9th in my heat and 21st overall. Big shout out and thanks to Pat Sharples GB Freeski coach and BSS for all the support!
Now back in Breckenridge where spring seems to have hit early and with 4 days of sun behind me and 10 days to come with warm temperatures excited to be out riding Breck parks everyday, working on some new tricks and perfecting what I know. Stay tuned for edits and photos to come. Peace and Love
