After a great week back in CO riding @BreckenridgeMountain and BreckParks Saturday the 17th March brought the festive St Patricks Day Celebration. Today, St. Patrick’s Day is probably the most widely celebrated saint’s day in the world.
Saturday the 17th was also the Kick Aspen Big Air Invitational contest at the bottom of the Aspen Mountain under the lights. Stoked to get last minute invite Tan and I rolled over from Breck with good friend Taryn and Ian Thorley. After a week of 50+ temperatures and 60f (15c) in Aspen practice at 6pm was pretty slushy and loose with the 50 or so skiers and riders getting a feel for the 65foot big air.
8pm kicked off with Skiers Qualifying 2 runs each and round 9pm we finally got to get on it and do our 2 runs. Second to drop in the Snowboards I put down an ok first hit. But not overly pleased set it way better second go and sent it landing bolts(clean). Ian put down a nice Cab10 and with that we both moved on to the 7 man final Yea! Skiers dropped again first for their two run final round 10pm and threw down some big tricks! Third to drop in Finals I went with the Cab9 again and double dipped it sending it pretty deep to a solid as landing.. Run two stepped it up with a double 1080 but went a little big and didn’t ride away clean. My mate Ian sent it with the double rodeos but slightly short first run and going massive second wasn’t able to ride away.
With some great riders and strong tricks was nervous for results… Anxiously waiting they finally set up the podium and of course skiers first again and then boarders.. oh here we go heart racing… Third place- Chase DeMeulenaere.. now this was good or real bad Ian said:) and pay out was only top three spots.. arrr and second place Joe Mango.. No way was it gonna be me on top? NO? And taking 1st and the Pot of Gold Nate Kern… Wooohoooooo couldn’t believe it!! Was such a great night and pumped to have the luck of the Irish on a special St Patricks day in Aspen. Must of been the green Smith I/O goggles:) BoomTown! Thanks to Aspen for having us and putting on a rad event, the crew Tan, T and Ian! the fair judging not just cause I ended on top and the great music and MC’s!
